Ethel Smyth: The Wreckers. Overture and Prelude to Act II: On the Cliffs of Cornwall.
Ethel Smyth was a prominent figure in the women’s suffrage movement.  Her most famous opera ‘The Wreckers’ draws on the tales of Cornish people luring ships onto the rocky shores.   

Gustav Mahler: Symphony no 5.
This huge symphony is described as Mahler’s Eroica, moving from tragedy to triumph.  It also includes the haunting adagietto, so familiar from the film score of ‘Death in Venice’
